Otakuthon

6 min read

Another Otakuthon has come and gone.

Overall, I'm feeling pretty ambivalent about the con. There wasn't much in terms of paneling and events that I was particularly interested in and it took me most of the weekend to get out of "study/school" mode for me to really get into it. Hanging out with friends made it worth it though!

I feel like Otakuthon is the con I take the least amount of pictures at, but here they are~ cosplay.hoshikage.net/gallery.…

Friday
- Spent the morning/early afternoon trying to finish up cosplay stuff (was cosplaying Aura from Ace Attorney that day).
- Picked up pre-reg with Hamano--Ayumi and then spent a good couple of hours derping around and shooting Ace Attorney fun times with her, her mom, and Diane.
- Waited in line for the merch room for like an hour and luckily got in by around 8:30, so we could do a quick tour.
- Met up with up with some other friends and panel hopped for a couple of hours before calling it a night.

Saturday
- Drove down to the con with Steph.
- Went to the A New World Final Fantasy concert which was nice.
- Photoshoot with Daniel Watt. The shots I saw look amazing! I'm super excited to see the finished product! :D
- Chilled around the con for a while.
- Panel hopped with the same group of friends as Friday.
- Ended the day with the Persona World panel, which was pretty decent, but I was so tired I left halfway through to go home.

Sunday
- Was supposed to get to the con with Steph but she got sick. :(
- Spent the morning trying to finish Hijikata's coat (ended up getting to the con around 11ish).
- Walked around and chilled with Diane and co.
- Did a walk around the merch hall again, and caved and got a print I'd been eyeing.
- Went out for what has become our traditional end of con shabu-shabu dinner.

Next up will probably be a day at Montreal ComicCon, but I'm not really feeling super pumped about it, so that might change. If not, I've decided to go to AnimeUSA this year since I have some time off!

I started working full time at the beginning of November and suddenly all of my free time disappeared, haha. School isn't helping on that front either mind you. My first set of exams are tomorrow and my last exam is next Monday. I can't wait to get them over with and to have one less thing to worry about for a while! I'm so sick of studying corp tax. >.>

Hopefully I'll find some time over the holidays to get a bit of sewing in! I just got a dress form/mannequin and I want to put it to good use~!

Still exhausted, but Otakuthon is over. Lots of fun times were had. Got to see a lot of people I haven't seen in a while and got to meet some new super awesome people. Thankfully this con was much less stressful and way more relaxed then Otakon was.

Once again, I barely took any pictures. Plus most of them were on my phone since I forgot my camera on Saturday, but here they are anyway:

----
Thursday
- Picked up pre-reg with Hamano--Ayumi and then hung out/went location scouting with her and Udon-chan.

Friday
- Got off to a bit of a rocky start. Our bus ended up never showing up, so we didn't have time to show alucardleashed where we wanted to shoot on Saturday.

- Ended up getting to the con at around 5PM.

- Took a tour of dealers/artists alley. Bought some beautiful Hannibal prints and an MLP towel set. Steph and I also commissioned this guy who was doing watercolor commissions. I really love the variety that I saw in the artist alley, both in terms of fandoms and in terms of the types of things being sold; especially when compared to Otakon.

- Walked around for a bit and got some food. Ran into a bunch of people along the way.

- Shot with RocknamLee which was fun.

- Grabbed some food and then changed out of costume and called it a night.

Steph and I being derps. Taken by Udon-chan after getting my game back. XD

Saturday
- I was a retard and either never set my alarm clock or I was so tired that I don't remember shutting it off. Anyway, I ended up getting up half an hour before I was supposed to pick Steph up and I still had to pack all of my Iron Man pieces and finish doing some touch ups. Needless to say we ended up getting down to the con about an hour later than planned. Steph, I'm really sorry about that, especially since I was the one who was so adamant on being there on time. ;__;

- The two of us went casual for the morning which was very freeing. Udon-chan and MuseBasement were kind enough to let us store our stuff at their tables during the day.

- Commissioned Diane. Can't wait to see it! 8D

- Checked out one of the Turnabout skit things with Steph. We got there part way through so we were really confused as to what was going on, but we were super amused. We both agreed that they managed to keep the characters in character and the sound cues were on spot and very entertaining for us.

- Met up with Anthony and John throughout the day.

- Also met up with Melodie, her boyfriend and her sister. It was super nice to see them again and I'm glad they were able to make it to the con even if it was just for one day.

- My second derp moment of the day was when Steph and I were changing into our Avengers cosplay and I realized in my haste to pack my stuff that morning, I forgot to pack the harness in which the abs and the thighs attach to. Luckily my mom was heading downtown and was kind enough to bring it to the con center for me. <3

- Just chilled around the con for a while.

- Ran into these super sweet Fire Emblem cosplayers as we were chilling around before our shoot with Jack. <3

Pic is from Friday, but the awesome Fire Emblem peeps we met. The Gaius's bag was filled with candy which was awesome!

- Shot with alucardleashed outside in the wind. It got off to a bit of a rough start with the flashes not working properly and the wind being kind of a deterrent, but things worked out in the end and the shots looked awesome from what I saw! <3 Also, we got super lucky that the security guard knew what cosplay was because Steph and I are pretty sure he waited until the last moment before telling us that we weren't supposed to be shooting where we were, so yay for that.

- Was 300% done with wearing Iron Man after the shoot, so as soon as we got back to the con center, we changed back into normal clothes.

- Ran into Stealthos-Aurion. I'm glad I got to see you a couple of times over the weekend!

- I am extremely pleased that I am able to say that we cosplayed from The Avengers and then had shawarma after! 8D (Steph, I want those derpy shawarma eating pics so I can add them to this XD).

Sunday
- This was seriously not my year in terms of organization as I didn't give myself enough time to get into costume before Steph was at my door to pick me up. LOL.

- Bag checked a couple of things before heading off to my shoot with Jeff. The shoot went well. I can't wait to see the pictures!~

- Went to the Fire Emblem panel. It started off okay, but then there were a bunch of people at the back of the room who were talking really loudly, so Steph and I just said "fuck it" and left.

- Went to pick up our commissions (which are gorgeous btw) and to visit friends at their artists/dealers booths.

- Changed out of costume before just chilling for a few hours.

- Went to shabu-shabu with John, Anthony and Alysa where fun times were had~ <3

All of my swag from the con (minus a Gerome cellstrap that I forgot about, lol).

------

So overall, a fun con. I wish I'd gone to see more stuff, but scheduling and cosplay really didn't allow for it. Next year I'll probably stick to "easier" and less restricting cosplay due to the work/school/life schedule I know I'm going to have in the coming year. I seriously burnt myself out this year, totaling about 600 hours worth of work (including estimates for what I didn't clock) which is double what I did last year and in less time. So yeah, lesson learned lol.

Got home from Otakon last night. I'm super tired and my body hurts all over, lol.

Anyway! The con was very up and down for me. Overall, I had a good time though. I have forever learned my lesson on not biting off more than I can chew (I'm looking at you Iron Man suit).

A huge shoutout to :iconhamano--ayumi: who has put up with my crap for the past 2-3 weeks and was always there for moral support when I was so fucking done with everything. A shoutout to our awesome roommates :iconsasha-dee:, Anna and Nicole. You guys are the best roommates ever. You totally made my weekend worth it! <3

A thank you also goes to :iconhenrickson: for transporting props for Hamano--Ayumi and I. You were seriously a life saver!

Finally a big thank you to everyone who stopped my for pictures and/or complimented my cosplay! You're all super awesome!

I didn't take a lot of pictures this year due to costume constraints, but all of them are on my website here. My faves are at the bottom of this post.

Starting this post off with the awesome surprise gift from Sasha-Dee and Anna! You gals are the best! <3

Con Report
Okay, so honestly, Steph and I really didn't do anything at the con this year in terms of events/panels. I would have loved to have seen the Yoko Kanno concert, however you apparently needed a special pass for it that I never knew about until it was too late.

The con started off roughly for me. I was running off of very little sleep and then on Thursday, not even 15 minutes after picking up my pre-reg, I was a complete dumbass and lost my badge. I must have dropped it while carrying all of the boxes I had. Anyway, needless to say, Thursday did not end on a high note for me.

I ended up getting up at 5:30 the next morning in order to be ready for 7 to get in line for reg. Thankfully, I was close to the front of the line and it only took me a little less than an hour to get through it once it started moving.

A shot of my Luna cosplay while waiting in line.

At 10, Steph and I had a shoot for VLR with :iconmimiiswonderful:. The shots I saw looked great and I can't wait to see them all!

After the shoot, we were planning on checking out the Anime Mirai part 1, but on our way, we ran into :iconstealthos-aurion:, :iconshadowlancerrena: and a bunch of their friends. I'm glad we ran into you guys and that we got to hang out for a bit! :D We chilled  for a bit before heading down to Artists Alley and then going back to our hotel room to get changed. At some point during that time, we ran into :iconrose-of-battle:. I'm glad you spotted us! I'm sad we didn't get to hang out more!

I had a shoot with Nicole at 4:30. It had been raining up until then, but luckily the weather cleared up about half way through the shoot.

I'll Take You On! by rosieru-chan
Preview shot from the shoot. I'm excited to see the rest! :D

After the shoot I honestly don't remember what we did. I think I went off to hang out with Annie while Steph headed back to our room to help Sasha finish up her costumes.

Later that evening we met up with :iconblanko-cosplay:, and we all went to the hotel pool for a while before grabbing some food.
---
Saturday started off a bit better. I cosplayed as Arya in the morning while Steph went casual. Alex and Anna stayed back in the room to finish up their costume stuff. Steph and I did a quick run of the Dealer's Room and then I had a shoot at noon. My photog was running late and Nicole was sweet enough to offer to shoot me instead, but she showed up eventually and things worked out okay.

Preview shot from the shoot.

After that, I headed back to the hotel room to finish up my Iron Man suit and start changing into it. My god that was an adventure in itself. It took forever to finish and then get into. Hamano--Ayumi, a huge thanks goes out to you for putting up with me and helping me get in and out of it. I had very limited movement in it and we were freaking out because we were going to be late for our shoot. Luckily, we managed to get where we supposed to be relatively on time and got some awesome pics with :iconrocknamlee:.

A hall shot of Steph and I taken by The-Soulfully-Saint.

That evening after getting out of costume, Steph and I did a final run of Artists Alley before calling it a night.
---
Sunday morning was kind of hectic trying to check out of hotel. Sasha-Dee and Anna were kind enough to take our suitcases down for us. Thank you guys so much! ;o;

Steph and I shot with :iconenchantedcupcake: for our Wreck-it Ralph cosplay. It was great to finally actually meeting you after shooting next to you last year! XD

Omg, that orange foundation will forever make me laugh. A hall shot of our cosplay taken by Dguizzy.

N
ext up was a final run of the Dealer's room where I picked up an Iron Man figure, a Madoka soul gem and an Otakon shirt.

After that I'd wanted to see the Yoko Kanno concert, but as mentioned above, you apparently needed a special pass for it which I did not know about until getting to the end of the line. I'm assuming it must have been written in the actual programming booklet (which I had no time to open all weekend), and I wish they had actually blocked a time off for it on the schedule. There was a simulcast of it, but at that point, neither Steph nor I had eaten yet, so I figured "fuck it" and we went to Starbucks instead.

Sasha-Dee and co couldn't stay that late and they were all pretty hungry so we headed off for Japanese food at the harbor.

It was then time to head back to the hotel and say our goodbyes (but not before the most random and hilarious encounter in the hotel lobby. Oh Giana, you just made it all that more hilarious XD).

Steph and I chilled in the lobby before taking our stuff over to the Days Inn for the night. We went out to get our cheesecake at the Cheesecake Factory as per tradition before crashing in the hotel room.

We left Baltimore the next morning at 8:30AM and got home at around 11PMish. It's good to be back home!

Con Photos

This Jaime was super adorable. After taking his picture, he took out a gold coin and handed it to me saying "A Lannister always repays his debts". XD

rose-of-battle as Leia from ToX2. I'm so glad you spotted us! <3

I was drooling over how pretty their armor looked. So badass!

Super adorable Severa!

Supernatural cosplay isn't something I usually take pictures of, but that Benny was awesome.

A really awesome Sandy!
